General Brock and the Maiwand Lion – 13th May 2024

A TADS talk by Mike Cooper

Monday 13th May 2024; 8.00 pm at Heath End Village Hall, Heath End Road, Baughurst, RG26 5LU

The Maiwand Lion in Forbury Gardens, Reading commemorates a battle fought in Afghanistan in 1880. The lion is posed in snarling defiance to the north – towards Russia. This talk looks at the Battle of Maiwand against the backdrop of Anglo- Russian rivalry in Asia – The Great Game and the history of the Lion itself.

Mike Grundy’s expertise centers on the architecture, art and history of London and the major capital cities of Europe. He has a CHE in the History of Art and Architecture from Birkbeck College, London. Enjoy this review of  successive British architectural styles, based on the example of London’s 270 Underground stations. Built in stages from the 1860s to the current date by the leading architects of their day, the Underground has usually been at the forefront both of architectural development and of technological achievement. The many surviving examples of the successive architectural styles of the period,  each set in the context of contemporary architectural movements in Britain and Europe.
